Three Gorges Resettlement Museum: A Historic Human Journey

The Three Gorges Project’s resettlement effort stands as one of the largest and most significant human migration initiatives in history, relocating 1.3 million people over a span of 17 years. Among these, 260,000 individuals were relocated from Hubei Province. This massive relocation process set a world record for large-scale engineering-induced resettlement. To commemorate this historical achievement and honor the spirit of the migrants, the Hubei Three Gorges Migration Museum was established in Zigui County, the first county submerged by the Three Gorges Dam, located upstream from the dam. This museum is the third migration museum in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, following the ones in Chongqing and Yunyang.

The Hubei Three Gorges Migration Museum offers a deep, immersive experience of the resettlement journey. Through exhibits that recreate the process of reservoir impoundment and simulate underwater villages, visitors are taken back to witness the dramatic changes experienced by the reservoir area. It provides a vivid portrayal of the social, cultural, and environmental transformations caused by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam.

As part of the Yangzi Explorer’s 3-night or 4-night cruise, passengers have the opportunity to visit the Hubei Three Gorges Migration Museum. This tour is included in the itinerary, giving guests a chance to explore the history behind the dam and the vast resettlement effort that reshaped the region.
