Fengjie, a small county in northeastern Chongqing, is located about 400 kilometers from the city's main urban area, bordering Enshi City in Hubei Province to the south. Situated at the entrance of the Three Gorges, it is home to the iconic Kuimen Gate, where Chijia Mountain and Baiyan Mountain face each other.
With a history of over 2,300 years, Fengjie was once known as Yufu, Yong'an, and Renfu. In 649 AD, during the Tang dynasty's Zhen Guan era, Emperor Taizong named the county to honor the unyielding character of Shu Chancellor Zhuge Liang and Emperor Liu Bei. The name has been used ever since.
Fengjie has long been a hub for poets. The saying, "All poets pass through Shu, and those who reach the Three Gorges will surely compose poetry," reflects its rich literary history. Over the centuries, nearly a thousand poets have visited the county, leaving behind more than 10,000 poems. The "Complete Works of Kuizhou Poetry" alone includes 4,464 poems from 742 poets. In 2017, Fengjie was designated "Chinese City of Poetry" by the Chinese Poetry Society.
